Uttarakhand's Best Kept Secret — Colonial Cantonment in Oak-Covered Hills
Travel Guide
Lansdowne, at 1,706 metres in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, is perhaps the most underrated and genuinely peaceful hill station in all of northern India. Unlike the busy, commercialised hill stations of Mussoorie and Nainital, Lansdowne retains the quiet, unhurried character of a classic British cantonment town — with its well-maintained colonial buildings, immaculate parade grounds, dense oak and rhododendron forests, and an absence of the tourist hordes that crowd other Uttarakhand destinations.
The town is home to the historic Garhwal Rifles — one of the Indian Army's most decorated infantry regiments — and their impressive War Memorial and Regimental Centre Museum offer fascinating insight into the Garhwali soldier's remarkable history from the colonial era through to modern conflicts. The cantonment roads are lined with tall pine trees, and walking through them feels like stepping back a hundred years.
Bhulla Tal, an artificial lake created by the Army in the heart of the cantonment, is a favourite for paddle boating and morning walks. The Tip n Top viewpoint (3km from town) offers 270° views across the valleys below and glimpses of Himalayan peaks on clear days. The Santoshi Mata Temple and the Durga Devi Temple draw pilgrims from surrounding villages. For travellers seeking genuine peace, fresh mountain air, minimal commercialisation, and authentic Garhwali culture, Lansdowne is the perfect antidote to India's overhyped tourist circuits.
