Yoga Capital of the World — Adventure, Spirituality & Ganga Rafting
Travel Guide
Rishikesh, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas where the River Ganga flows swiftly from the mountains onto the plains, is one of India's most extraordinary destinations — simultaneously a global centre for yoga and meditation, a thrilling adventure sports hub, and one of Hinduism's most sacred pilgrimage sites. Situated at just 372 metres above sea level in Uttarakhand, Rishikesh is the gateway to Char Dham Yatra and the starting point for dozens of Himalayan expeditions.
The city's two iconic suspension bridges — Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula — span the emerald-green Ganga and have become symbols of Rishikesh worldwide. The vibrant ghats, especially Triveni Ghat and Parmarth Niketan, come alive every evening with the mesmerising Ganga Aarti — a ceremony of fire and devotion attended by thousands of pilgrims and travellers from around the world.
For adventure seekers, the stretch of Ganga running through Rishikesh offers some of Asia's best white-water rafting — with rapids ranging from Grade I to Grade IV. Bungee jumping at Jumpin Heights (83 metres — India's highest), cliff jumping, kayaking, camping on riverbanks, and mountain biking are all available. Yet minutes away, ashrams offer serious yoga teacher training, Ayurvedic healing, and silent meditation retreats. Rishikesh is the rare place where both thrill-seekers and spiritual pilgrims feel equally at home.
