Everything You Need to Know About Valley of Flowers

Overview

The Valley of Flowers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, is one of India's most spectacular natural wonders. Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 3,658–3,962 metres, this 87.5 sq km alpine valley is famous for its extraordinary floral diversity — over 500 species of wildflowers carpet the valley floor from July to September in an explosion of colour that has captivated explorers, botanists, and pilgrims for centuries.

The valley was "discovered" by British mountaineer Frank Smythe in 1931, who named it the Valley of Flowers after being awestruck by its breathtaking beauty during the descent from the Kamet expedition. However, local shepherds and Sikh pilgrims on their way to Hemkund Sahib had known of this magical valley for centuries. The region gained international recognition when Joan Margaret Legge, a British botanist, died here in 1939 while collecting flower samples — her grave at the valley entrance remains a testament to the valley's magnetic pull on naturalists.

The trek to the Valley of Flowers begins at Govindghat on the main Badrinath highway, proceeds 14km to the mountain village of Ghangaria (3,050m), and then divides — one trail continues 3.5km to the Valley of Flowers, while another climbs 6km to Hemkund Sahib (4,329m), the world's highest Gurudwara. Ghangaria serves as the base for both destinations. The valley blooms sequentially — primulas and anemones in July, then Himalayan poppy (Meconopsis aculeata), blue poppy, cobra lily, asters, and geraniums through August, reaching peak bloom in late August–September when the entire valley floor turns into a living tapestry of colour.

The park is home to rare wildlife including snow leopard, Himalayan brown bear, red fox, and dozens of rare bird species. The combination of an intact alpine ecosystem, extraordinary biodiversity, and dramatic Himalayan scenery makes the Valley of Flowers one of India's most treasured natural destinations.
