Everything You Need to Know About Tehri

Overview

Tehri Lake is one of India's most dramatic and unusual adventure destinations — a vast emerald-green reservoir created by the Tehri Dam, one of Asia's largest dams and the world's eighth tallest, standing 260 metres high in the Bhagirathi valley of Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. The reservoir, which submerged the historic old Tehri town in 2006, stretches for 42 kilometres and lies at an elevation of 770 metres surrounded by forested Himalayan hillsides and snow-capped peaks. What has emerged from this transformation is an extraordinary adventure playground unlike anything else in north India.

Tehri Lake Adventure Park operates the only bungee jumping facility in Asia built over a river (technically over the lake), with a jump height of 83 metres. Beyond bungee, the lake hosts jet skiing, kayaking, banana boat rides, cliff jumping, wakeboarding, floating huts (overnight stays on the lake), and long-distance open water swimming events. The Indian Army conducts national-level water sports events here. For calmer experiences, the lake's edges host eco-camps with direct lake frontage, bonfire evenings, and morning kayaking through mirror-still waters reflecting the surrounding peaks.

New Tehri town was built on the surrounding hillsides as a planned township and now houses the district administration. The surrounding area includes Chamba (30km), Kanatal (45km), and Dhanaulti (55km) — making Tehri an excellent base for combining adventure water sports with the hill station experiences of the Mussoorie–Chamba corridor. Tehri's profile has risen dramatically since 2018 when the Tehri Adventure Park opened; it now attracts adventure seekers from across north India seeking experiences unavailable anywhere else in the Himalayan foothills.

  • Floating huts must be booked well in advance — they fill up months ahead on weekends.
  • Combine Tehri with a night at Kanatal (45km) for a complete hill-station and water-adventure trip.
  • The bungee jump requires minimum weight of 40kg and maximum of 120kg — no health conditions.
  • Carry warm layers for evenings — the lake valley gets cold quickly after sunset.
  • Water levels fluctuate seasonally — the lake is highest (and most photogenic) September–October.
  • The drive along the lake from the dam to the camps is one of the most scenic in Garhwal.

Packing List

  • Change of clothes for water sports — dry sets needed
  • Quick-dry towel and swimwear
  • Waterproof sandals for lake activities
  • Warm jacket for evenings
  • Sunscreen (essential on the open water)

  • Cash — some lake camp operators are cash-only

Health Precautions

  • At 770m, no altitude concerns.
  • Sun exposure on the open lake is intense — use SPF 50+ and wear a hat.
  • Avoid water activities after meals — wait at least 1 hour.
  • Bungee jumping is not recommended for those with heart conditions, spinal injuries, or during pregnancy.
  • Drink plenty of water — activity plus sun dehydrates quickly.

Safety Tips

  • Only participate in water sports with licensed, safety-certified operators.
  • Always wear the life jacket provided — mandatory for all water activities.
  • Follow all briefing instructions before bungee jumping.
  • Do not swim in the open lake without a certified guide — currents can be unpredictable.
