Uttarakhand's Best-Kept Secret — Pristine Cantonment at 2,118m
Travel Guide
Chakrata is a protected cantonment hill station in Dehradun district at 2,118 metres — and arguably the most pristine, uncrowded hill station in all of Uttarakhand. Historically restricted to tourists due to its sensitive military location near the Indo-Tibetan border, Chakrata is now open to all visitors (Indian nationals with valid ID) and rewards those who make the effort with something genuinely rare: Himalayan beauty without the crowds.
The surrounding Jaunsar-Bawar region is home to one of Uttarakhand's most fascinating tribal cultures — the Jaunsari people, whose traditions, architecture, and customs bear traces of Central Asian and Tibetan influence. Walking through Jaunsari villages is like stepping into a living anthropological exhibit. The famous Tiger Falls (35km from Chakrata) is one of India's tallest single-drop waterfalls at 312 feet — a spectacular sight reached via a short but steep forest trail.
Chilmiri Neck, the highest point of Chakrata at 2,580 metres, offers sweeping 360° views of the Bandarpunch, Kedarnath, and Swargarohini ranges. The dense Deodar and Rhododendron forests around Chakrata are exceptional for birdwatching and wildlife spotting — Himalayan black bear, barking deer, and leopard sightings have been reported. For digital detox seekers, Chakrata offers the additional benefit of very limited mobile connectivity — a blessing or a challenge depending on your perspective.
