Uttarakhand's Best-Kept Secret — Apple Orchards & Himalayan Panoramas at 1,700m
Travel Guide
Khirsu is one of Uttarakhand's most enchanting and least-visited hill stations, perched at 1,700 metres in the Pauri Garhwal district. Unlike the crowded tourist centres of Mussoorie or Nainital, Khirsu retains an unhurried, village-like atmosphere where the loudest sound is the wind through ancient oak and rhododendron forests. The village is set on a ridge that offers sweeping, unobstructed panoramas of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks — on clear days, travellers can identify Trishul, Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Chaukhamba peaks in a single sweep of the horizon.
The landscape around Khirsu is defined by terraced apple orchards, dense forests of oak, deodar, and burans (rhododendron), and small Garhwali villages that have barely changed in centuries. GMVN operates a tourist rest house here, and a handful of homestays offer warm hospitality and home-cooked Garhwali meals. The nearest market town is Pauri, about 19 kilometres away, which itself sits at 1,814m and serves as the administrative headquarters of Pauri Garhwal district.
Khirsu is best visited between March and June, when rhododendrons bloom in vivid shades of red and pink, and between September and November, when the skies clear after the monsoon and offer the finest mountain views. In December and January, light snowfall dusts the orchards and forests, creating a quiet winter wonderland that few visitors discover. For those seeking solitude, fresh mountain air, and genuine Himalayan scenery without the tourist crowds, Khirsu is simply unmissable.
