Everything You Need to Know About Chopta

Overview

Chopta, nestled at 2,680 metres in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, is one of the most underrated gems of the Indian Himalayas. Often called the "Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand", this pristine meadow destination sits on the edge of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and offers some of the most spectacular Himalayan panoramas in Garhwal — including sweeping views of Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, and other towering giants.

The signature trek from Chopta climbs 4km through dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and fir to reach Tungnath Temple at 3,680 metres — the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the Panch Kedar (five sacred Shiva shrines of Garhwal). From Tungnath, a further 1.5km trail ascends to Chandrashila peak at 4,130 metres, where on clear days the 360° panorama takes in Kedarnath, Chaukhamba (7,138m), Neelkanth, Trishul, and even the Nanda Devi massif. The combined trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila is considered one of the finest short treks in the entire Garhwal Himalaya.

Chopta is accessible year-round but transforms dramatically with seasons. Winters (December–February) bring heavy snowfall that covers the meadows in white, making the trek to Tungnath a magical snow walk. Spring (April–May) sees the rhododendron forests burst into vivid red and pink bloom — a photographer's paradise. Summer and monsoon bring lush green meadows with alpine wildflowers. Autumn (September–November) offers crystal-clear skies with the most spectacular mountain views.

The base for exploring Chopta is typically Ukhimath (13km away) or the small campsite cluster at Chopta itself. The area is also a wildlife corridor with sightings of musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and numerous Himalayan birds including the Himalayan monal (the state bird of Uttarakhand).

Travel Tips for Chopta

Altitude Warning

Chandrashila peak at 4,130m involves a significant altitude gain of 1,450m from Chopta in under 6km. Acclimatise at Ukhimath or Chopta for one night before attempting the full trek to Chandrashila. Watch for AMS symptoms above 3,500m.

Travel Tips

  • Start the Tungnath trek by 7 AM to reach Chandrashila before afternoon clouds close in.
  • Camping at Chopta is the best way to enjoy sunrise and sunset mountain views.
  • Combine with Deoria Tal (8km from Ukhimath) for an excellent 3-day itinerary.
  • Carry trekking poles — the trail is steep in sections and slippery in snow.
  • The road from Ukhimath to Chopta is open year-round but may need chains in heavy snow.
  • Carry your own food and water — facilities at Chopta are basic (dhabas, no restaurants).
  • Winter visitors (Dec–Feb): carry microspikes or crampons for the icy Tungnath trail.

Packing List

  • Trekking boots with ankle support
  • Warm layers — fleece and down jacket
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Trekking poles
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ and UV sunglasses
  • Headlamp for early morning starts
  • High-energy snacks
  • Water bottle and water purification tablets
  • Camera for panoramic shots
  • Crampons / microspikes for winter visits

Health Precautions

  • Chopta at 2,680m and Chandrashila at 4,130m — acclimatize at Ukhimath for one night first.
  • The 1,450m altitude gain on the Chandrashila trek is significant — ascend slowly.
  • Symptoms of AMS (headache, nausea) are possible above 3,500m — carry Diamox.
  • The trail is exposed at Chandrashila — turn back in thunderstorms or heavy cloud.
  • In winter, frostbite risk is real — cover all extremities and return before sunset.

Safety Tips

  • Do not attempt Chandrashila in poor visibility or approaching thunderstorms.
  • Inform your hotel/campsite of your planned return time before departing.
  • Emergency: Ukhimath Police: 01364-265100. Forest checkpost at Chopta entry.
  • Register at the forest checkpost before the trek — mandatory in winter months.
