Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand — Gateway to Tungnath & Chandrashila
Travel Guide
Chopta, nestled at 2,680 metres in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, is one of the most underrated gems of the Indian Himalayas. Often called the "Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand", this pristine meadow destination sits on the edge of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and offers some of the most spectacular Himalayan panoramas in Garhwal — including sweeping views of Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, and other towering giants.
The signature trek from Chopta climbs 4km through dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and fir to reach Tungnath Temple at 3,680 metres — the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the Panch Kedar (five sacred Shiva shrines of Garhwal). From Tungnath, a further 1.5km trail ascends to Chandrashila peak at 4,130 metres, where on clear days the 360° panorama takes in Kedarnath, Chaukhamba (7,138m), Neelkanth, Trishul, and even the Nanda Devi massif. The combined trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila is considered one of the finest short treks in the entire Garhwal Himalaya.
Chopta is accessible year-round but transforms dramatically with seasons. Winters (December–February) bring heavy snowfall that covers the meadows in white, making the trek to Tungnath a magical snow walk. Spring (April–May) sees the rhododendron forests burst into vivid red and pink bloom — a photographer's paradise. Summer and monsoon bring lush green meadows with alpine wildflowers. Autumn (September–November) offers crystal-clear skies with the most spectacular mountain views.
The base for exploring Chopta is typically Ukhimath (13km away) or the small campsite cluster at Chopta itself. The area is also a wildlife corridor with sightings of musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and numerous Himalayan birds including the Himalayan monal (the state bird of Uttarakhand).
