Trekking Guide & Naturalist

While Kedarnath and Badrinath draw millions, Tungnath remains one of Uttarakhand's best-kept secrets. At 3,680 metres, it is the world's highest Shiva temple — and the trek from Chopta is one of the most rewarding in the Garhwal Himalayas. Add the optional Chandrashila summit (4,130m) for sunrise views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath, and Chaukhamba.

How to Reach Chopta

Chopta is 250km from Rishikesh via Rudraprayag and Ukhimath. By road: Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Ukhimath → Chopta (approx 7–8 hours). Shared jeeps run from Ukhimath to Chopta (₹150–₹200). The nearest railhead is Rishikesh.

The Trek to Tungnath

The trail begins at Chopta's parking area and ascends through dense rhododendron and oak forests before opening up into alpine meadows (bugyals). The path is well-defined and manageable for most fitness levels. From November to March, the trail is snow-covered — crampons and trekking poles become essential.

Chandrashila Summit — Worth It?

Absolutely. The additional 1.5km from Tungnath to the Chandrashila summit takes about 1 hour but rewards you with one of the finest 360° Himalayan panoramas in Uttarakhand. Start by 5am from Chopta to reach the summit at sunrise — it's a view that stays with you for life.

  • Nanda Devi (7,816m) — highest peak in India (excluding Karakoram)
  • Trishul, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Bandarpunch — all visible on clear days
  • The Garhwal valley below with the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers

Where to Stay

  • Chopta has several basic guesthouses and camps (₹500–₹1,500/night). Book ahead in peak season.
  • Camping on the bugyals above Tungnath is permitted with prior permission — a magical experience.
  • Ukhimath (15km from Chopta) has better accommodation options if Chopta is full.

Pro Tip

Combine Tungnath with the nearby Deoria Tal lake (2,438m) for an epic 3-day weekend itinerary — Deoria Tal → Chopta → Tungnath → Chandrashila.

Important Warning

The Tungnath temple is open April–November. In winter, the deity is shifted to Markandeshwar temple in Ukhimath. Always verify temple timings before your trip.
