Little Kashmir of Uttarakhand — Panchachuli Peaks & Gateway to Milam Glacier
Travel Guide
Munsiyari, perched at 2,200 metres in the remote Johar Valley of Pithoragarh district in Kumaon, is one of the most dramatically beautiful and least-commercialised Himalayan destinations in India. Nicknamed "Little Kashmir" for its alpine meadows, snow-capped peaks and the clear Gori Ganga river flowing through its valley, Munsiyari sits almost on the India–Tibet border and commands one of the most spectacular mountain panoramas in the entire Himalayan range.
The view from Munsiyari of the Panchachuli massif — five peaks between 6,334m and 6,904m — rising like a crown of ice across the horizon is among the most breathtaking sights in all of Uttarakhand. The name Panchachuli (five hearths) refers to the Pandavas' final camp where they are believed to have cooked their last meal before ascending to heaven via this range.
Munsiyari is the base camp for several challenging but rewarding treks, the most famous being the Milam Glacier Trek — a 100km round-trip journey through ancient Bhotiya villages to the second-largest glacier in Kumaon, the source of the Gori Ganga. Khaliya Top (3,500m, accessible in 4–6 hours from Munsiyari) offers panoramic views of Panchachuli, Nanda Devi, and the Nepal Himalaya. The Birthi Waterfalls, Darkot village with its traditional Shauka culture, and the Tribal Heritage Museum complete a unique cultural and natural experience rarely found anywhere else.
