Travel Guide

Everything You Need to Know About Kuari Pass

Overview

Kuari Pass (3,640m) is one of the most celebrated winter and spring treks in Uttarakhand, famous for offering some of the most comprehensive views of the central Himalayan peaks — including Nanda Devi (7,816m — India's highest peak entirely within India), Dronagiri (7,066m), Kamet (7,756m), Bethartoli, Hathi Parbat, and Trishul. The pass was named "Lord Curzon's Trail" after the British Viceroy who trekked this route in 1905 and famously described the panorama as "the finest mountain view in the world."

The trek typically begins from Joshimath or Auli (the ski resort) and passes through the magnificent Khulara meadow before ascending to the pass. The trail traverses dense oak and rhododendron forests at lower elevations, giving way to open snow fields in winter and wildflower meadows in summer. Kuari Pass is considered a moderate trek — longer than Dayara Bugyal or Nag Tibba, but not as demanding as Gangotri–Tapovan or Rudranath.

The best seasons are winter (December–February) for a snow trek and pre-monsoon (April–May) for wildflower views. The circuit can also include Pangarchulla Peak (4,700m) — one of the most popular summit climbs in Garhwal — as an extension.
