Everything You Need to Know About Nag Tibba

Overview

Nag Tibba (3,022m) is the highest peak of the Lower Himalayan range in Uttarakhand and one of the most popular weekend treks for those based in Delhi and north India. Located in the Tehri Garhwal district, just 290km from Delhi, Nag Tibba can be completed in 2 days — making it the go-to trek for Delhi weekend warriors who want a genuine mountain summit experience without taking too many days off.

The name translates to "Serpent's Peak" in Garhwali — the summit has a small Nag Devta (serpent deity) temple revered by local villagers. The trek begins from Pantwari village (1,600m) and ascends through oak, rhododendron, and deodar forests before emerging onto the open ridge that leads to the summit. The panoramic views from the top on a clear day include Bandarpunch, Swargarohini, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri peaks — a 180-degree sweep of the Garhwal Himalaya.

Nag Tibba receives snow from December through February, transforming into a white winter wonderland and making it one of the best easy winter snow treks from Delhi. The trail is well-marked and guided tours are available from multiple Mussoorie and Dehradun-based operators.

Tips & Precautions

Travel Tips for Nag Tibba

Travel Tips

  • Drive overnight from Delhi on Friday night and start the trek Saturday morning for a classic weekend schedule.
  • The trail from Pantwari is clear but hire a guide for the first time — the forest sections can confuse.
  • Camp at the base camp (2,750m) for the best experience — do not rush to summit and return in one day.
  • In winter (Dec–Feb), the trail from 2,400m onwards needs microspikes — carry or rent in Mussoorie.
  • Carry sufficient water from Pantwari — there are very few reliable water sources on the trail.
  • Start the summit push by 5am to beat clouds and get the clearest peak views.

Packing List

  • Microspikes (winter)
  • Warm jacket and fleece
  • Trekking poles
  • Sleeping bag (for camping)
  • Rain poncho (monsoon edges)
  • Headlamp for early summit start
  • Water (3 litres minimum)
  • Camera with spare battery

Health Precautions

  • At 3,022m, mild AMS unlikely but possible for very low-altitude residents.
  • Stay hydrated — even a 2-day trek at altitude requires 3+ litres daily.
  • Nearest medical facility: Mussoorie (40km from Pantwari).

Safety Tips

  • Start summit push early — afternoon clouds can reduce visibility to near zero.
  • Do not attempt in heavy snowfall — descent can be treacherous.
  • Keep mobile network in mind — signal exists at Pantwari but disappears above 2,400m.
