4th Kedar in Panch Kedar — Remote Shiva Temple at 3,600m Surrounded by Meadows
Travel Guide
Rudranath is the fourth of the Panch Kedar temples — the circuit of five Shiva temples in the Garhwal Himalayas where Lord Shiva is worshipped in different forms. At Rudranath (3,600m), Shiva's mukha (face/head) is enshrined, and the temple is considered one of the most remote and authentically wild of the Panch Kedar shrines. Unlike Kedarnath (accessible by helicopter) or Tungnath (reachable in 4km), Rudranath requires a full 24km trek through some of the most spectacular landscape in Chamoli district.
The trek to Rudranath begins from Sagar village (1,350m) near Gopeshwar in Chamoli, and the route is a dramatic ascent through multiple ecological zones: terraced agricultural fields of Sagar village, dense mixed forests of oak and rhododendron, the expansive Panar Bugyal and Pitradhar meadows (offering extraordinary views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchachuli), and finally the hidden valley of Rudranath with its sacred kunds (ponds) and the ancient temple.
The trek is classified as moderate to difficult — the distance (24km one way) and remote location mean that trekkers must be prepared for 3–4 days of sustained walking, limited connectivity, and basic accommodation at the top. The reward is extraordinary: a landscape largely unchanged by tourism, a profound religious atmosphere, and mountain views that rival any in Uttarakhand.

Frequently Asked
Everything travellers ask before visiting Rudranath
Both are Panch Kedar Shiva temples. Kedarnath (1st Kedar, 3,583m) is the most famous and accessible (helicopter or 16km trek). Rudranath (4th Kedar, 3,600m) is far more remote (24km trek from Sagar), sees a fraction of Kedarnath's visitors, and offers a more rugged wilderness experience with meadow views.
