Trek to the Source of the Ganga — Gaumukh Glacier & Tapovan Meadow at 4,463m
Travel Guide
The Gangotri–Gaumukh–Tapovan trek is one of the most spiritually and physically significant treks in the Indian Himalayas. Gaumukh ("Cow's Mouth") at 3,892m is the snout of the Gangotri Glacier — the primary source of the sacred Bhagirathi river, which becomes the Ganga after joining other tributaries at Devprayag. Tapovan, at 4,463m, is a high-altitude meadow above the glacier with breathtaking close-up views of Shivling (6,543m), Bhagirathi peaks, and Meru (6,660m) — peaks that only elite mountaineers typically see from such proximity.
The trek begins from Gangotri (3,048m), itself a major Char Dham pilgrimage site, making this one of the few trekking routes in India that combines high-altitude adventure with deep religious significance. The 18km trail from Gangotri to Tapovan takes trekkers through the Gangotri National Park — home to snow leopard, Himalayan brown bear, bharal (blue sheep), and the endangered Himalayan gold eagle.
Rated difficult, this is not a beginner's trek. The Gaumukh glacier crossing to reach Tapovan involves walking on and around the glacier — an experience that demands sure footedness and physical stamina. However, Gaumukh alone (without continuing to Tapovan) is a moderate trek accessible to fit trekkers. The combination of religious significance, glacier adventure, and close proximity to Shivling's dramatic spire makes Gangotri–Tapovan one of the most unforgettable treks in Asia.

Frequently Asked
Everything travellers ask before visiting Gangotri–Gaumukh–Tapovan
Yes — Gaumukh alone is a popular moderate trek (18km round trip from Gangotri, 2 days). The Tapovan extension (additional 4km, 500m altitude gain across glacier) is rated difficult and requires a guide and crampons. Both are rewarding; Tapovan significantly amplifies the experience.
