Summer in India means one thing for millions of families: escape to the hills. But Mussoorie, Nainital, and Shimla are now as crowded as Delhi on a weekday. The good news? Uttarakhand has dozens of hill stations that remain genuinely peaceful, offer stunning Himalayan views, and are completely tourist-infrastructure-ready. Here are the best alternatives for 2025.
1. Chakrata — The Cantonment Town Nobody Knows
At 2,118m in the Jaunsar-Bawar hills, Chakrata is a protected cantonment area which historically restricted tourism — keeping it pristine. Today it is open to all. The Tiger Falls (315-foot single drop waterfall) and Chilmiri Neck viewpoint are major draws. Dense deodar forests and zero mobile network = perfect digital detox.
2. Munsiyari — Gateway to Johar Valley
Munsiyari sits at 2,200m in Pithoragarh district with unobstructed views of the Panchachuli peaks. It's a base for Milam and Ralam Glacier treks and sees a fraction of Nainital's crowds. The drive from Almora (5 hours) is through apple orchards and oak forests — spectacular in itself.
3. Binsar — A Wildlife Sanctuary Hill Station
Binsar (2,420m) is a wildlife sanctuary above Almora in Kumaon. The Zero Point viewpoint offers one of the longest Himalayan panoramas in the region — 300km of peaks including Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, and Panchachuli. Only 20 accommodation units are allowed in the sanctuary — book months in advance.
4. Lansdowne — The Garhwal Rifles Hill Town
At 1,706m, Lansdowne is a small cantonment town 250km from Delhi with Victorian-era infrastructure, pine forests, and the Bhulla Tal lake. Unlike other hill stations, it has almost no commercial tourism development — which is precisely its charm. Perfect for a quiet 2-day getaway.
5. Khirsu — Pauri's Hidden Gem
Khirsu (1,700m) near Pauri Garhwal has wild apple orchards, oak forests, and 360° Himalayan views including Nanda Devi and Trishul. Almost no tourists. GMVN has a decent guesthouse here. The drive from Rishikesh (130km, 4 hours) passes through charming Garhwali villages.

Visit between May 15–June 15 for the best weather in most Kumaon and Garhwal hill stations — before the monsoon sets in and after the winter chill lifts.
