Kedarnath — the abode of Lord Shiva at 3,583 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas — is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India. The 2025 season promises better infrastructure, new trekking facilities, and improved helicopter services. Whether you are planning your first Yatra or returning for a second darshan, this guide covers everything.
Opening Dates 2025
The Kedarnath temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (usually late April or early May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (October–November). In 2025, the portal is expected to open on 2 May and close on 26 October. Exact dates are announced by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) closer to the season.
Pro Tip
Book your helicopter slots and accommodation at least 60 days in advance. Slots fill up within hours of opening on the BKTC portal.
How to Reach Kedarnath
By Road
The nearest motorable point to Kedarnath is Gaurikund (1,982m), 16km from the shrine. From Delhi, take NH-58 via Haridwar → Rishikesh → Rudraprayag → Ukhimath → Sonprayag → Gaurikund. The drive is approximately 470km (10–12 hours).
By Helicopter
Helicopter services operate from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi helipads to the Kedarnath helipad. The flight takes 7–10 minutes and costs ₹4,500–₹8,000 per person one-way depending on the helipad. Book through the official BKTC portal or authorised operators to avoid touts.
